Bespoke curtains vs ready-made — is the investment worthwhile?
Bespoke curtains are cut and sewn to your exact window dimensions. Ready-made curtains come in fixed sizes and frequently need hemming, pinning, or compromise on drop length. The distinction is apparent the moment they are hung.
Ready-made curtains ship in standard widths — typically 117 cm, 168 cm, or 228 cm. If your window falls between sizes, the curtains either look skimpy or carry excess fabric. Drop lengths are equally limited.
Bespoke curtains eliminate this problem. Fullness is calculated so the fabric hangs correctly when drawn. Hems are finished to the precise length. Headers are matched to your pole or track.
Fabric choice is the other significant differentiator. Ready-made ranges are restricted to whatever the retailer holds in stock. Bespoke opens up hundreds of textiles, patterns, and lining options including blackout, thermal, and heavyweight interlining.
On cost, ready-made curtains are less expensive at the point of purchase for standard openings. But once alteration costs and a less-than-ideal fit are factored in, the gap narrows. For bay windows, unusually tall openings, or wide spans, bespoke is almost always the sounder investment.
