How do you measure windows for bespoke blinds?
Precise measurement is the difference between a blind that fits flawlessly and one that looks compromised. There are two primary fitting approaches: inside the recess and outside the recess.
For an inside-recess fit, measure the width at three points — top, middle, and bottom — and use the narrowest reading. Then measure the drop at three points — left, centre, and right — and use the longest. This accounts for recesses that are not perfectly square, which is common in older properties.
For an outside-recess fit, measure the width you want the blind to span. Add at least five centimetres each side to prevent light gaps. Measure the drop from the intended bracket position to where you want the blind to finish, allowing ten centimetres above the recess for the headrail.
Always use a metal tape measure. Fabric tapes stretch and introduce error. Work in millimetres and round down rather than up — a blind that is marginally too wide will not fit inside the recess.
Bay windows present the greatest challenge. The angles between sections must be exact. A digital angle finder helps, but it is easy to misjudge.
This is precisely why we offer complimentary measuring. Our fitters carry the correct tools and the experience to get it right first time. No charge, no obligation.
