What are lantern blinds and when do you need them?

Lantern blinds are purpose-built for roof lanterns — the raised glass structures commonly found on kitchen extensions and orangeries. A roof lantern sits above the roofline, typically comprising four sloped glass panels and sometimes a flat top section.

Without blinds, roof lanterns admit substantial heat and glare. In summer, the room below can become uncomfortably warm. The glass behaves like a greenhouse, trapping thermal energy. In winter, the large glazed area loses heat rapidly.

Lantern blinds address both problems. They are fitted inside the lantern frame with tensioned fabric covering each glass panel. Pleated fabric is the most common choice because it follows the slope of the glass cleanly. Roller blinds suit flat-top panels.

Most lantern blinds are motorised because the blinds are overhead and cannot be reached by hand. A remote control allows you to open and close individual panels or all of them simultaneously.

Fabric selection matters. A reflective-backed fabric rejects solar heat before it enters the room. A translucent fabric softens glare while preserving natural light. Blackout options exist but are less common for lanterns.

If your extension overheats in summer or suffers from persistent overhead glare, lantern blinds are a sound investment.

We template and fit lantern blinds to any shape or dimension. Fitting is complimentary.
